Journey Introduces Curated Loyalty Program for Hotels and Short-Term Rentals

Introducing Journey: A New Era in Travel Rewards

Curated travel rewards platform Journey has officially launched, enabling travellers to earn and redeem points across a carefully selected network of hotels and short-term rentals.

This network is described as an “exclusive alliance” of individual and private properties, showcasing a handpicked selection of luxurious accommodations worldwide.

Claiming to be the first rewards programme specifically designed for private rentals and boutique hotels, Journey Rewards members earn at least five points per dollar for every eligible stay booked directly with a property, compared to a mere one point per dollar for stays arranged via third-party OTAs.

Additionally, the platform empowers operators with AI marketing tools to enhance the guest experience, optimize off-season bookings, attract repeat visitors, and effectively compete with major international chains.

Members have the flexibility to transfer points among themselves or combine them with friends and family for reservations at Alliance member properties. They can also opt for smaller rewards if preferred.

Future Endeavors and Community Engagement

Looking towards the future, Journey aims to build a “guild” of influential frequent travellers who will provide reviews for the platform and suggest stays for future inclusion. Furthermore, travellers can accrue points by giving feedback on their stays and “favoriting” properties.

Meet the Leadership Team

Journey’s leadership team and investors comprise industry veterans who bring a wealth of experience:

  • John Sutton, Founder and CEO: With a strong background in media, including a significant role at Red Ventures, Sutton is poised to articulate Journey’s strategic vision while attracting new talent.

  • Brian Kelly, Senior Adviser and Investor: As the founder of the leading travel media platform The Points Guy, Kelly’s insights will be invaluable to Journey’s growth.

  • James McBride, Alliance Ambassador and Senior Adviser: McBride will leverage decades of leadership experience to support independent travel operators, helping them flourish in a competitive market.

  • Eric Wu, Senior Adviser and Investor: Co-founder of Opendoor, Wu’s innovative approach will guide Journey’s expansion strategies.

  • Chris Burch, Senior Adviser and Investor: Burch’s extensive knowledge in luxury travel and hospitality will help craft exceptional guest experiences.

Recently announced, Journey has also acquired StayWatch, a site dedicated to short-term rental travel deals, formerly known as Sponstayneous. Co-founder and CEO Zach Busekrus expressed his excitement to join Journey as the head of the Journey Alliance, stating he aims to discover the world’s best independently owned stays while collaborating with hospitality entrepreneurs to redefine loyalty for a new generation of travellers.

The Importance of Loyalty in Travel

“More than ever, loyalty matters to consumers. Travellers seek to earn and redeem points for transformative experiences. Whether that involves a safari or a private vacation rental, many top lodging options are absent from the current loyalty landscape,” said Kelly.

“That’s where Journey comes into play — a revolutionary platform rewarding travellers for staying at properties where they’ve traditionally faced loyalty limitations. No longer will they need to compromise on loyalty in pursuit of bespoke travel experiences.”

A Curated Collection for Modern Travellers

Sutton emphasized, “Today’s travellers encounter an overwhelming array of choices. Our curated collection features exceptional, independent stays, representing a handpicked selection of premium accommodations around the globe.”

“By constructing a platform from the ground up, we’re introducing travellers to unique, off-the-beaten-path properties while rewarding them for supporting independent operators.”

“Journey aims to create an ecosystem where independent operators can thrive without sacrificing their identity or profitability. Traditionally, loyalty programs have benefitted the program itself rather than the hotels or vacation rentals.”

As Journey prepares to launch its iOS and Android apps in the spring, the platform is expected to feature approximately 2,000 private home rentals and 200 boutique hotels within its ‘Journey Alliance.’ Notable properties include Nihi on Sumba Island in Indonesia and Dawn Ranch in Sonoma, California, along with several remote treehouses and luxury resorts.

In discussions with Bloomberg, Sutton also revealed Journey’s ambitions to introduce a credit card product tailored for frequent travellers, aiming to create competitive revenue opportunities. This potential offering could rival products released by major companies, including JPMorgan Chase & Co., American Express, Capital One, and others in the evolving travel loyalty landscape.
