In Memoriam: Harris Rosen, Visionary Leader and Philanthropist
Harris Rosen, renowned founder, president, and CEO of Rosen Hotels & Resorts, and a celebrated philanthropist, has passed away at the age of 85.
“On behalf of the Rosen family, it is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of Harris Rosen, who left us this morning at the age of 85, surrounded by family and loved ones,” stated Frank Santos, VP of Rosen Hotels & Resorts.
“Harris was an angel to so many here on earth, and now he takes his place among the angels in heaven. A beloved father, grandfather, and a pillar of our community, his boundless generosity and love touched countless lives through his unwavering commitment to helping underserved communities, promoting education, advancing the fight against cancer, and supporting health and wellness initiatives. The family will hold a private Celebration of Life and kindly asks for privacy during this difficult time. Thank you.”
In the 1970s, Rosen embarked on a journey with a single hotel, taking a chance on himself, a gamble that paid off tremendously. Today, the Rosen name is associated with seven hotels in the Orlando area, alongside numerous foundations dedicated to benefiting children in underserved communities, cancer patients, and individuals affected by disasters globally.
He initiated the Tangelo Park Program and the Parramore program, offering free preschool for children aged 2-4. Graduating high school students from these programs receive scholarships covering tuition, books, and room and board for college or vocational school.
Furthermore, he founded RosenCare, an insurance plan providing comprehensive coverage to associates and their families, including 90% coverage for medications. The establishment of the Rosen Medical Center also reflects his commitment to employee wellness, offering medical care and wellness programs on campus.
To support the hospitality industry and future generations, Rosen generously provided millions to establish the Rosen College of Hospitality Management at the University of Central Florida—recently ranked as the best in the nation. He also contributed to building a new neuro-oncology laboratory at the University of Florida to honor his son Adam, who tragically passed away from brain cancer at 26. This facility enables leading researchers to investigate effective treatments for malignant brain tumors.
The Rosen name also adorns the Rosen Aquatic and Fitness Center and the Jewish Community Center in South Orange County.
As a father of four and an avid lover of animals, especially his dogs, Rosen’s legacy extends far beyond hospitality.
Many industry leaders have shared their condolences and reflections on his impact.
“Harris Rosen was an inspirational figure and a shining example of the passion and drive that hoteliers need to succeed. His love for the industry made him the largest independent hotelier in Florida, but he showed us the true meaning of hospitality through his philanthropic work,” said Rosanna Maietta, President/CEO of the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA).
“His generous donation to the University of Central Florida built the Rosen College of Hospitality Management, which was just ranked best in the nation for the fifth consecutive year for its hospitality management and tourism program. Harris left an indelible mark on this industry and its people that will be felt for generations. We will miss him.”
“We are saddened by the news of the passing of Harris Rosen, an icon and visionary in the hospitality industry and here in Orlando,” said Marco A. Manzie, President of Paramount Hospitality Management.
“For those fortunate enough to know him, this is a profound loss. Mr. Rosen was more than just a hotelier and philanthropist—he was a mentor, a role model, and a friend whose life’s work continues to inspire us. His extraordinary ethics, integrity, humility, kindness, and generosity truly set him apart.”
“Harris Rosen has been an outstanding friend to the University of Central Florida, inspiring future generations to do the right thing,” expressed UCF President Alexander N. Cartwright.
“His vision and dedication were instrumental in establishing the Rosen College of Hospitality Management, the nation’s leading hospitality program, while lifting countless lives through his philanthropy. On behalf of all of us at UCF, we extend our deepest gratitude for his remarkable legacy.”
“Harris Rosen was not only a trailblazer in hospitality but also a tremendous supporter of AAHOA and our members,” stated AAHOA Chairman Miraj S. Patel.
“His involvement exemplified the spirit of partnership and hospitality that defined his career. We extend our prayers and thoughts to his family, colleagues, and all who knew him.”
Harris Rosen’s remarkable life and contributions will forever inspire future generations in the hospitality industry and beyond, leaving a legacy of compassion and commitment to service.
