Arlo Hotels, the unique lifestyle hotel brand with locations in New York, Chicago, and Miami, is excited to announce the opening of the much-anticipated Arlo Washington DC on November 18, 2024. Situated in the heart of downtown D.C. and within walking distance of Penn Quarter, Judiciary Square, and Capitol Hill, the hotel is surrounded by the city’s premier attractions, including the National Mall, numerous museums, the convention center, and a variety of dining, shopping, and entertainment options. This marks Arlo Hotels’ seventh property and its first venture in the capital.
The new hotel will feature 445 rooms and incorporates the oldest surviving apartment building in the district, the historic 1888 Harrison Apartments, along with a new 12-story addition. The Harrison Apartments, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994, exemplifies the Romanesque Revival architectural style and showcases the evolution of urban living in Washington, D.C. Architecture Incorporated successfully blended the historical structure with the new addition during the renovation process.
The interiors of the hotel were designed by the multidisciplinary studio Meyer Davis, known for their work on Arlo Midtown and Arlo Wynwood. Led by Will Meyer and Gray Davis, the studio emphasized the historic building’s original features while incorporating the organic aesthetic found in other Arlo properties. Although the D.C. location boasts distinctive elements, returning guests will recognize the brand’s signature style, which includes light-tone woods, a custom grid lighting feature, and a sleek reception desk made of oak.
Upon entering the hotel’s public spaces, guests are welcomed into inviting lounges featuring a beautifully restored vaulted brick ceiling from the building’s original construction. Here, guests can relax on plush couches or leather chairs, making it a perfect setting for socializing, reading, or working. The space also hosts a full-service bar, ideal for social gatherings and events. Nearby, guests can gather in the fireplace lounge, a cozy spot for enjoying drinks and conversation during the colder months.
The guest rooms and suites are elegantly designed to provide a sophisticated retreat for relaxation and rest, located in both the new structure and the historic building. The rooms in the original Harrison Apartments feature exposed brick walls in their compact dens, adding warmth and character. Each room comes with dark walnut flooring complemented by hints of green and red in the headboards and custom lighting fixtures. Bathrooms feature black-and-white penny tiles reminiscent of the original tiles from the Harrison Apartments, and select rooms offer balconies with city views.
The new addition includes a delightful interior courtyard, a spacious fitness center, and the luxurious penthouse Arlo Suite, which provides ample space for VIP guests and stunning views of Judiciary Square and the iconic national monuments.
On the historic ground floor, guests will find Arrels, a signature restaurant by Chef Pepe Moncayo. Designed by the experts at //3877, the dining room reflects Chef Moncayo’s Spanish heritage through warm materials, terra-cotta tiles, exposed brick, and textured plaster. The celebrated chef takes a contemporary approach to traditional Spanish cuisine, showcasing a curated menu that emphasizes open-fire cooking to enhance the authentic flavors of classic tapas and entrées. Arrels also includes a vibrant bar and lounge area on the ground floor, serving craft cocktails in an inviting atmosphere that captures the essence of Spain. For an exclusive experience, diners can sit at the chef’s counter and watch the culinary action unfold. Additionally, Arrels will host the Bodega by Arrels, offering premium coffee, espresso drinks, and grab-and-go breakfast and lunch curated by Chef Moncayo.
One of the standout features of Arlo Washington DC is the ART DC rooftop, which features a bar, lounge area, and resort-style pool. Chef Moncayo will also lead the culinary offerings here, focusing on Japanese-style hand rolls, yakitori, and other delicately crafted dishes.
The rooftop bar and lounge offers both indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing guests to savor panoramic views year-round. Transitioning from the pool to the interior, a jewel box-like vestibule with textured wall coverings creates an element of surprise. Additional design elements include Verde Alpi marble and Calacatta turquoise stones, along with striking 3D tiles adorning the bar front. With a festive atmosphere perfect for cocktails and dancing, ART DC will introduce the brand’s nightlife concept, Arlo After Dark, in 2025, featuring a dynamic program of entertainment and music.
Arlo Hotels’ partnership with renowned art curator Jasmine Akrel has been instrumental in developing the brand’s innovative art program. Akrel will oversee the Living Room Gallery Series at Arlo Washington DC, launching with its grand opening and showcasing museum-quality works from artists such as Sage Barnes, Vicky Barranguet, Angels Grau, Denis Meyers, and more. As with other Arlo properties, the hotel has collaborated with pioneering artist Brooke Einbender (Mindbender Art) to transform the elevator spaces, blending art and technology for an immersive guest experience.
Arlo Washington DC aims to achieve LEED certification within six months of its opening (Spring 2025), demonstrating over a 25% reduction in energy costs, along with a 6,000-square-foot green roof and a 12,000-gallon cistern to collect and reuse rainwater on-site.
As an ideal venue for groups and events, Arlo Washington DC features extensive space for social functions, meetings, and weddings, including 4,287 square feet of event space and five private meeting rooms. The hotel is conveniently located within walking distance of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and various attractions suited for groups and visitors.
Enhancing the overall brand experience, Arlo Washington DC will showcase Arlo’s signature “Deep Wood” scent in the lobby, alongside unique in-room amenities such as fortune cookies, on-demand fitness videos through a partnership with Alo Moves (the online fitness service of Alo Yoga), and a thoughtfully curated minibar featuring local products.
